Over the years Kev and his team of blacksmiths have sent ArtFe’s metal work sculptures to be galvanised at Forfar Galvanisers Limited. Trusting us to take care of their amazingly creative and highly sort after pieces. Scroll down to see some of the pieces arriving in our yard and going through the plant. Spot the Gruffalo whizzing through our automated crane system and taking a very hot zinc bath, – quite the spectacle! We’ve had thistles, sunflowers, large and small highland coos and even a fire breathing dragon all handled with the care and dedication FGL are well known for.

Who are ArtFe?
“Using centuries old blacksmithing techniques, ArtFe create beautiful bespoke sculptures for private buyers, commercial businesses and more recently public commissions. The sculptures are primarily made from mild steel. Occasionally other mediums such as recycled plough metal, wood and glass are incorporated. Modern techniques like galvanising and acid washing create individual and enduring finishes.” from ArtFe’s about page
Kev has honed his craft with dedication and precision, mastering the traditional skills of the trade. Over time his work moved beyond traditional blacksmithing into something more expressive. His skills evolved into an artisan craft, and from that transformation, ArtFe was born.

5 reasons to galvanise metal artwork:
🔨Provides a strong base layer for additional finishes
🔨Long-term protection against rust and corrosion
🔨Withstands rain, frost, and changing weather
🔨Preserves both intricate detail and large structures
🔨Flexible finish options — natural, painted, or coated
How does Hot Dip Galvanising help metal work sculptures?
With metal work sculptures exposed to rain, frost, and changing weather, galvanising forms a bonded zinc coating that resists corrosion for decades. For an industrial look galvanised steel can be left a natural silver-grey patina. Or it can be painted or finished in other ways such as Kev’s practise of adding an acid wash afterwards. The zinc base layer actually improves adhesion. It gives artists more creative freedom and the galvanising process means that zinc coverage will protect both intricate details and large structures.
If you’re creating pieces that need to stand the test of time, hot dip galvanising is a fine choice for a stunning and protective finish!
